Characterization of marine microbial communities around an Arctic seabed hydrocarbon seep at Scott Inlet, Baffin Bay

چکیده

Seabed hydrocarbon seeps present natural laboratories for investigating responses of marine ecosystems to petroleum input. A seep near Scott Inlet, Baffin Bay, was visited in situ observations and sampling the summer 2018. Video evidence an active confirmed by methane analysis overlying water column, which is 260 m at this site. Elevated concentrations bottom above down current from decreased background seawater levels mid-water column >150 seafloor. Seafloor microbial mats morphologically resembling sulfide-oxidizing bacteria surrounded areas bubble ebullition. Calcareous tube worms, brittle stars, shrimp, sponges, sea anemones, urchins, small fish soft corals were observed seep, with showing incorporation. Sediment communities included putative methane-oxidizing Methyloprofundus , sulfate-reducing Desulfobulbaceae Sulfurovum . metabolic gene diagnostic aerobic methanotrophs ( pmoA ) detected sediment epicentre up 5 km away. Both 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed that pelagic oriented along geologic basement rise associated seepage (running SW NE) differed off-axis Relative abundances hydrocarbon-degrading elevated seep. Cold benthic megafauna typical sediments. Soft incorporate into biomass. High drops upper column. Pelagic persist cold

Arctic marine phytobenthos of northern Baffin Island

Global climate change is expected to alter the polar bioregions faster than any other marine environment. This study assesses the biodiversity of seaweeds and associated eukaryotic pathogens of an established study site in northern Baffin Island (72° N), providing a baseline inventory for future work assessing impacts of the currently ongoing changes in the Arctic marine environment. A total of...

Methane-Oxidizing Bacteria Shunt Carbon to Microbial Mats at a Marine Hydrocarbon Seep

The marine subsurface is a reservoir of the greenhouse gas methane. While microorganisms living in water column and seafloor ecosystems are known to be a major sink limiting net methane transport from the marine subsurface to the atmosphere, few studies have assessed the flow of methane-derived carbon through the benthic mat communities that line the seafloor on the continental shelf where meth...

Mercury and other trace elements in a pelagic Arctic marine food web (Northwater Polynya, Baffin Bay).

Total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and 22 other trace elements were measured in ice algae, three species of zooplankton, mixed zooplankton samples, Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), ringed seals (Phoca hispida) and eight species of seabirds to examine the trophodynamics of these metals in an Arctic marine food web. All samples were collected in 1998 in the Northwater Polynya (NOW) located b...

Metaproteomic analysis of Chesapeake Bay microbial communities

BACKGROUND Natural microbial communities are extremely complex and dynamic systems in terms of their population structure and functions. However, little is known about the in situ functions of the microbial communities. RESULTS This study describes the application of proteomic approaches (metaproteomics) to observe expressed protein profiles of natural microbial communities (metaproteomes). T...

Organochlorine contaminants in seven species of Arctic seabirds from northern Baffin Bay.

Organochlorine contaminants (OCs) were determined in liver and fat of seven species of seabirds (Alle alle, Uria lomvia, Cepphus grylle, Rissa tridactyla, Pagophila eburnea, Larus hyperboreus, and Fulmaris glacialis) collected in May/June 1998 from the Northwater Polynya in northern Baffin Bay. OC concentrations ranged over an order of magnitude between seabird species and OC groups, with PCBs ...
